I mean, I started quite a bit ago after someone asked me to write a specific story, but never really considered article writing and such until recently.
That started with me finally gathering the courage to say "Hey, this is me and I'll totally do the thing you need for X amount of money!" on a job listing somewhere on Reddit. Never do that for free, you pretty much never get credit for it, anyway, in terms of your name. Some sites will have a "X jobs done, 0-5 star review" system which doesn't tell you much.
Real sorry to hear about your Navy friends. That's terrible. Come on back home before WW3 hits and get your writing career in full force!

I'm out of the loop, but how'd you get your freelance writing done - through sites like ODesk (or upwork or whatever they're called now) or through forum requests here and there?
That's quite a lot of rough things, dang. Nice to know things are on the up and up though.
